In a bid to curtail violence of fresh attacks in Johannesburg’s CBD, metro police have on Monday said after a concerted effort, all affected roads in Sunday’s violence are clear and free to use by commuters.
No fewer than two people were reportedly killed overnight and five injured after violence flared up again in the CBD, Jeppestown and Hillbrow while storefronts were damaged and a building set alight with a truck torched.
Police spokesperson Capt Kay Makhubela, though, said on Monday morning that one person had been killed and more than 17 people arrested.
Johannesburg metro police department (JMPD) spokesperson Wayne Minnaar also said a second person was shot and killed in Denver on Sunday evening. “We are still investigating whether it is linked to violence or not.”
Makhubela said protesters also attempted to set fire to a mosque in the area. “They threw a petrol bomb at the mosque, but it didn’t catch fire,” he said.
Metro police however attended to a building fire on the corner of Jules and 24th streets, as well as truck that was ablaze in Denver while its teams helped clear the streets overnight.
Following the recent violence in JoburgCBD, some South Africans have however taken to social media to express their diverse opinions on the issue while some play the blame games.
Others suggested that the recent violence somewhat has political undertone with some foreigners allegedly involved.
