The Senate has set up a committee to probe the assault of a lady by Senator Elisha Abbo.
The media went agog, Tuesday, over the release of a CCTV footage where Abbo representing Adamawa central in the upper legislative chambers allegedly assaulted a nursing mother in an Abuja sex toy shop.
The video sparked outrage on the social media with many celebrities and human rights organizations including Amnesty International condemning the action and consequently calling on the police, the leadership of the National Assembly and other relevant agencies of government to swing into action and ensure that the 41-year-old Senator is arrested and prosecuted.
The Senator, however, reacted to the development revealing that the video was compressed and didn’t show the full report of what transpired between him and the lady.
He also insinuated a possible hijack of the situation by his political enemies as he pointed that the incident happened long before he became a senator.
Dr Ahmed Lawan, the president of the Senate disclosed on Wednesday via his twitter handle @SPNIGERIA that it has set up a bi-partisan committee to investigate the incidence and submit it’s findings within two weeks.
The full statement of the Senate President reads, “following a point of order raised by Senator @ubasanius on the matter of assault allegedly carried out by Senator Elisha Cliff, the President of the Senate, @DrAhmaLawan has said while it remains an allegation, the matter will be investigated and all sides given a fair hearing,”
“Distinguished Senator @DrAhmadLawan has set up a bi-partisan committee to investigate the allegation of assault by Senator Elisha Cliff Abbo on a woman at a sex toy shop in Abuja. The committee has two weeks to submit its report.”
