The Nigerian Army Headquarters Garrison Corporal and Below Competition came to a climax on Friday with an obstacle crossing exercise at Lungi barracks, Abuja.
The annual event which commenced on Monday, 29th April 2019 featured competitions including drills, map reading exercise, shooting exercise and a 3.2 kilometer race.
The competitors were grouped into three teams. Team A comprised of Army Headquarters Department, Office of the Chief of Army Staff, Nigerian Army Resource Center and Nigerian Army Welfare Limited.
Team B had participants from Headquarters Nigerian Army Intelligence Corps, Headquarters Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police, Headquarters Nigerian Army Finance Corps, Directorate of Army Public Relations and the Directorate of Army Legal Services.
Team C competitors were personnel from Army Headquarters Garrison and the Special Women Operations Battalion.
Speaking at the end of the competition, the training officer of Army Headquarters Garrison, Brig Gen Hillary Mabieokwu noted that the competing teams had a good outing. He thanked the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai for providing the necessary logistics for the smooth conduct of the exercise.
In his remarks, the Special Guest of Honour, Maj General Anthony Bamidele Omozoje stated that this year’s event is remarkable in line with the vision of the Chief of Army Staff which is “to have a professionally responsive army in the discharge of its constitutional roles”.
According to him, ” training is one of the pillars of professionalism because it makes you battle ready”. He said the lingering security challenges in the country requires the need for routine trainings to improve the competency of personnel.
He congratulated participants and thanked the instructors for coaching the team. The Special Guest of honour also gave monetary gifts to the winning team and female soldiers who distinguished themselves in the course of the competition.
Declaring the competition open on Monday, the Garrison Commander, Major General John Myam advised personnel to participate in routine trainings and exercise to ensure success during operations.
At the end of the competition, Team C emerged as the overall winner polling a total number of 804 points, while team B came second polling a total score of 801 points. Team A came third with a lesser margin of 656 points.
Highpoint of the event was the presentation of trophies and souvenirs to dignitaries and to participants who excelled at the event.
The one week event also witnessed the presence of the Garrison Commander, Principal Staff Officers from the Army Headquarters, Director Peace Keeping Operations, Deputy Chief of Policy and Plans as well as other top military brass from various corps.
