Four people have died following a massive explosion which ripped through a Paris bakery which was serving breakfast this morning.

Firefighters were at the scene investigating a suspected gas leak when the explosion happened.  According to the French Interior Ministry, two firefighters and two civilians have been confirmed dead.

In total, 36 people were injured in the blast which happened in the city’s 9th arrondissement at 9am local time.

The explosion destroyed the bakery, which is on the corner of the streets Saint-Cecile and Rue de Trevise.

Paris prosecutor Remy Heitz said: ‘At this stage we can say it seems from accidental origin, this would be a gas leak.’

He said that Paris firefighters were already at the scene for a suspected gas leak on Saturday morning when the explosion happened. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the blast.
