The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai has confirmed the appointment of Prof David Iliya Malgwi as Vice Chancellor of Nigerian Army premier university located in Biu, Borno State.
Gen Buratai disclosed that Malgwi’s confirmation was approved by the Federal Ministry of Education.
Speaking at the occasion, Buratai said the focal point of the university is to serve as solution centre for technological and operation problems of the Nigerian Army, military and the nation at large.
“It is designed to create the critical mass required for research, innovation, testing and development in the 21st century settings.
“Additionally, it will provide excellence, ingenuity, creativity and distinctive competences in intellectual outcomes”.
Buratai maintained that his vision is to make Nigerian Army University, Biu a centre of academic excellence in education, research and innovation for human capacity development, military science and technology for national development and for the progress of humanity.
The Army Chief thanked Biu Emirate Council for being a good host to the university while tasking all Nigerians to contribute positively in both human and material resources towards the university’s development.
He also thanked President Muhammadu Buhari, the Honourable Minister of Defence, Honourable Minister and Staff of Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Executive Council for their efforts toward the establishment of the university.
In his acceptance speech, Prof David Iliya Malgwi revealed that within the shortest time of existence the university has recorded tremendous achievements by matriculating 1000 undergraduate into five faculties and 39 programs.
Malgwi further said the university won five medals (two gold and three silver) in athletics during the just concluded NUGA games held at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ileife which qualifies the institution for the next World University Games coming up in Italy by June 2019.
“Since my appointment as the acting Vice Chancellor and the first academic staff of NAUB on 2nd October, 2018, I ensured that all measures were properly addressed to ensure that the dreams of the founding fathers and the implementation committee were met”.
Malgwi commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai for his support toward the grkwthof the university.
Recall that Nigerian Army University, Biu (NAUB) was approved by the Federal Executive Council on 3rd April 2018 with a Ground Breaking Ceremony on 30th October 2018 at the University’s permanent site.
The maiden university matriculation for the pioneer students held on 21st February 2019. NAUB has more than 500 academic and nonacademic staff.
